in applications where the load is relatively small, they are commonly found.
From the ball to the inner race and from the outer race to
the ball, the load is transmitted in a ball bearing. At a very small point, it
only contacts the outer and inner race since the ball is a sphere supporting it
spins very smoothly.
In applications like conveyor belt rollers, stainless
steel deep groove ball bearings are used where they must grasp heavy
radial loads. The roller is a cylinder in these bearings so the contact between
the outer and inner race is a line but not a point.
Over a larger area, this spreads the load out and as
compared to a ball bearing; it allows the bearing to handle much higher loads.
However, to handle much thrust loading, this type of bearing is not meant.
